Steep terrain on the Floridas. 30 degree climbs are standard. Camp at Rockhound State Park (reserve through the Reserve America website). Pack in all your gear, water, and food for multiple days. It would be exhausting to hike in and out of these mountains every day. Natural water sources are nearly nonexistent. The terrain is very rocky and its difficult to walk/climb on. Excellent cell phone reception. Multiple comms towers and repeaters along the range. February weather in 2023 had lows in upper 20s, highs in upper 60s.
Completed a first time DIY javelina hunt with no site visits/scouting yesterday (February 11, 2023) and put a blood donor in the dirt. I live in Colorado. Focused on Unit 25 and traveled it extensively. OnX maps were not accurate several times. For instance, I'd e-scout an area south of the Deming Airport IVO the Florida Mountains and OnX would indicate either BLM or state game lands. Driving out there was a different story. There were private residential areas and non-existent public roads. When I zoomed in on the OnX maps, it changed from public to private. Travel with an air compressor and plug kit. The trails are rocky and I had a flat tire on brand new tires installed 6 days prior to the trip. Will bring an electric scooter on a stick with trailer next time I draw that tag so I can leave the truck on the side of county roads and then cover 50-60 miles daily while saving my feet from becoming sore by walking on rocks all day. Get some elevation and glass down into the brush. A sit pad is critical. If you don't see anything in an hour, hit the Rick Forrest Javelina Blaster for 5 minutes and be ready to kill javelina or coyotes. This tactic worked well and I had both species run up close to my hide. Water sources are mainly on private land. Look for freshly chewed prickly pear cactus...easy to tell because the ears are usually laying on the ground and the chew marks are still green. They live their life in a one mile radius so when you discover sign, you are close. Their shit looks like dog shit, but green. You will discovered illegal immigrant backpacks and water caches close to county roads and interstate 10. Human traffickers link up with these people and move them to the interior west. Always assume human traffickers or Border Patrol agents are observing you. Finally, Border Patrol agents are a good source of intel as they are continuously in the field. I approached some and they were happy to talk me on to the X.
