So much wrong with this comment. You have turned NR hunters into a fictional boogeyman.
First, do you actually run into more NR hunters than you do Resident? I would find that hard to believe with the current capped tag numbers. I personally run into about 3-4 times more Res hunters than NR. The only times I’ve run into any NR hunters is in the high profile elk units like Diamond Creek where outfitters are thick.
Second, you’ve wrongly assigned a moral virtue to Res hunters and an immoral virtue to NR. I don’t even know how to respond to this grossly unjust comment. So I’ll just say that…it’s completely unjust and wrong of you to make such a bigoted assumption about trophy hunting vs hunting for food or family. I’m a Utahn. Our state has WAY more trophy potential than anything Idaho has to offer. Most Non-Residents only apply to Utah for the lifetime it takes to draw a tag because they want to shoot a trophy. And I’m ok with that. It doesn’t make them bad people.
Third, the wildlife in each state may be held in trust for the residents of that state…however, the woods do not belong to Idahoans and are not “your woods”. If we’re talking National Forest or BLM, the land and woods are the property of all Americans, not just Idahoans. It doesn’t matter if someone is hunting, hiking, skiing or biking. They have just as much right to be on National land as any Idahoan. Do you never leave Idaho? Have you never been to Yellowstone, Glacier or Grand Teton? If you have, did you consider yourself a trespasser on another state’s land? I doubt it.
I know many Idahoans blame NR hunters for overcrowding. I’ve heard this anti-NR sentiment from many. But the facts don’t support the claims. And honestly, I don’t understand it. UT is also full of non-residents who come to hunt, fish, ski, enjoy the National parks. But I couldn’t imagine how miserable we’d all be if we constantly blamed non-residents for all of our overcrowding problems. And yes…we have them too. Our population has also boomed. Hunting, fishing and skiing anywhere within 100 miles of Salt Lake is just ridiculously crowded. But I wouldn’t dare blame people who are just trying to enjoy life with their families and build memories.
But go ahead…keep spouting hatred toward Non-Resident hunters. Just know that as long as you place the blame there, you are ignoring the real problems facing wildlife management in ID.
No it’s not. That’s a fairly ignorant comment. Non-resident tags are capped and have been for years. The numbers have not increased, they have only decreased. If anything is “ruining” hunting for residents, it’s the huge influx of new residents and uncapped tags for those residents….the fact that residents can even buy multiple elk tags should be a red flag. Blaming non-residents is just a scapegoat that doesn’t deal with the real issue. You could completely prohibit non-resident hunting and you’d still likely have problems. But then you’d have to pay a lot more for your resident tags and who would you have to blame?
My complaint here is not the concept, it’s the egregious execution. The website crashes, the app crashes, it won’t take your credit card when you have tags in your cart…and then it crashes. Last year, I was number 136! Imagine that! I thought I won the lottery! I jumped in, grabbed my Diamond Creek A tag and tried to check out. (I used to hunt Diamond Creek when you could buy a tag in June, lol). Only it wouldn’t accept my payment. After multiple attempts with multiple cards, I finally figured out it was the tag itself. Something about that tag would not process, even though the website said there were still over 500 Diamond Creek A tags available. So I bought a backup tag and wrote IDFG an email laying out what happened. They did an “investigation” after which they told me I WAS WRONG…the Diamond Creek tags were sold out when I tried to purchase mine. How is that?! There are over 1000 Diamond Creek A tags and I was number 136. Now this year, I got kicked out 3 times at purchase time while using the app. I finally switched to the actual website and it worked. But no deer or elk tags showed available by that time (I was originally number 37282, but ended up over 70,000 by the time I actually got into the store). To reiterate, I don’t hate the concept ID has of getting in a line with a lottery (other than it wastes a day of work). But they really need to fix the execution. I can’t even imagine how this system could be any worse.
Got kicked out 3 times at purchase using the GoOutoors app. I finally went to the website and re-logged in. It took me right to the purchase page and I could only get a bear and wolf tag as the deer and elk tags are now gone. Thanks for a crummy experience once again, IDFG.
Myself and another guy both got kicked out of the system when it was our turn. Said there was an “error processing the queue” and I had to get another number. When is ID gonna fix this crap? Reading the comments here, it seems like this happened to a lot of others…
