@ Jason S.

We have a group of six hunters going into the Mt. Sneffels area this year. Five archery hunters and one muzzle loader hunter.

Both times I've hunted/camped up by Crescent lake our group has run into other hunting parties. We drove four-wheelers back to the lake from the main trailhead. If you have a lifted jeep or lifted truck you should be able to drive the 12 miles back to the lakes. (However, No promises) Honestly, we past camps the entire length of the trail. During our second trip, we hiked the south derby trail over to island lake, which is in unit 26 and hunted that basin. At the time Winter Hawk Outfitters were running a drop camp archery hunt in the area. We only ran into that hunting party once on, and that was on the trail, and that was it. Far less people, but a long hike. We did hear elk bugling every morning while we were over in unit 26. If you're ambitious it is worth the hike, but it will be one hell of a haul out should you shoot an elk. Hope this information helps.

Thanks,
Adam Hurd

Any reason why a guy shouldn't hunt the MT. Sneffels area during archery season?

A group of my buddies and I hunted unit 25 and 26 in Sept. of 2016. Hunting pressure was high, we hiked over from Crescent lake to Turret Peak and bumped into 10 different hunters. So, we moved over into unit 26 and bumped into the Winter Hawk Outfitter team. Needless to say, they were not impressed to see people in their valley. The hunting was very slow, but if you like trout fishing I would recommend visiting the lakes in that area.

On top of the slow hunting one of guys in our groups Polaris side by side, blow up on the trail about a half mile pasts the steep ravine that crosses the creek. It took us almost five hours to tow that side by side back to the trail head with two four-wheelers’. what a pain in the butt, and at the same time what a fun memory.
