Hunted 1st rifle for Elk a couple years ago. Killed a 6x6 opening day (not a big one, but my first bull). Only spent two and half days in the unit, so not much to say other than I saw two elk and killed one.
@Cade J. - He sued the hunters on the basis that, by accessing public land that he thought was locked in by his private, they pointed out that his ranch is actually about 1/3rd the size that it was represented to him when he purchased it. Eshelman should have sued his real estate agent for falsely representing "corner locked" public land as inaccessible to the public. I would bet that we will likely see a flood of land transfer requests from checkerboarded private landowners that don't want to deal with corner-crossing to create contiguous tracts of public/private. As long as these are done properly, should be good for everybody.
I'm not Trail, obviously, but I try to have 2-4 tags per year (one per month September to December). I had 3 this year, the closest of which was 500+ miles of driving just to get to my unit, the furthest was about 960 miles one-way. Spent more time driving to/from this year than actually hunting. For my schedule the number of tags I try to get depends on types of hunts, drive time, available PTO, etc. The schedule evolves as I do or don't draw tags through the spring.
If your geographic location reduces your drive time and you have plenty of paid time off, go for whatever you think you can handle.
Arizona runs their deer tags on a calendar year basis, starting January 1st. These tags purchased OTC starting December 1, 2022 are not good in any unit until January 1st 2023. Quotas start over January 1st.
