Lorenzo's 2018 Idaho Backcountry Gear List

This video highlights the gear I took on my most recent 10-day hunt in Idaho with Brandon Evans. It wasn't your traditional backcountry hunt as we wanted to stay very mobile and not commit to one area due to the fact that we had so many different tags in our pocket.

My Tags

  • 2 general deer tags
  • 1 bear tag

Brandon's Tags

  • 2 general deer tags
  • 2 general elk tags

Overall, I was pleased with my gear setup on this different style of hunt. It was perfect for being mobile and spiking out for a couple days if need be. The only problem I had was I did forget my cameraman's food that I packed for him, but we made things work. Other than that everything worked great in the inclement Idaho weather.

If you'd like to check out my older gear list (2017 New Mexico Archery Elk) you can see it here

@Lorenzo In your gear review of the Helinox chair you said "I'm definitely not leaving home without it" so, where's the chair?

We did great on Turning up bucks but terrible on turning up bulls. I wish we would have c concentrated on bucks more now looking back on the hunt. The bulls were so few and far between it was super frustrating.

After running into a couple local hunters and hearing how the wolves have cut and scattered the elk herds it all makes sense on what we experienced. Overall, id hunt that again only for bucks. For our future elk hunts, we are already researching new units.

Lets hope next year is better for both of us!

thanks! yeah, I could definitely get a video like that put together. This bag is the current metcalf on the market... But, in the near future there is some new things coming out for the MR bags.

I always appreciate your sense of using all gear on the market... not just " hunting " brands. I am an avid snowboarder, ultra runner, mountain biker, backpacker, hiker, fly fisherman and hunter. Being exposed to many brands and many products has been very valuable for my hunt planning. Nuun being one of those. Another product you may like is Tailwind. It packs 100 calories a scoop and taste good. I also like to run rain glove shells from OR. They work great for just keeping wind and weather off your hands and double as a water proof bag for electronics when they are stuffed in your pack. Also a bag of tea can go a long ways with dinner and before crashing for the night. Add a little magnesium powder, Natural Calm is a great brand, and you got yourself a great end of day drink. Cheers!

Good video. I'd like to see a video how you packed it all in there similar to the one Brady did. Also, that looks like an updated Metcalf bag. Is there a new version coming out that you're using or am I seeing things?

I saw one of your go hunt trucks parked near a trail head we hunted for 9days in Idaho. I heard through other hunters y’all had a rough time locating game for a few days. We had that issue. What was your thoughts on the unit?
