Coues deer and Mule deer can be found from the lowest part of the unit to the highest. In the very low desert area around Clifton it is mostly muleys and as you get higher in elevation and head North both are present all the way to Alpine.

I was there for 1st rifle October of 2017. We spoke at length to locals who scouted in September and the game warden. Apparently it has been very dry since 2016, the elk have not been using the areas around the lake and the forest service areas near by like they used to. All the elk we found were on BLM land very low, and a couple were up at the North end by John Brown. It seemed to us, this would be a better later hunt if/when snow pushes Utah elk down to Winter range, which there is a lot of along with a lot of old sign.

We found bulls. It was very dry. The game warden indicated it is better most years (dry this year) than it was this year. There were a few elk around Buckeye, some up around Dolores point and John Brown Canyon. My buddy killed a bull down near Paradox, accessing the bulls when they left the agriculture to go up into the steep country on BLM land to bed. A lot of locals hunting the area trying to kill one of the larger bulls (330ish) down there. Over all not a bad unit, just hard work to get into elk every day. My hunt was cut short due to a family emergency but I am pretty confidant we could have killed another bull with one more day.

Does anyone want to share any more info about this unit specifically for 1st rifle bull? A buddy and I drew it. We are used to glassing far and in fairly rough terrain for coues deer and elk in Arizona. Our expectation is to maybe see some bulls and depending on where they are in the cliffs, maybe shoot one if it is in a spot we can get it out of.
