While we all agree that a "slap on the wrist" punishment will not suffice, we also have to take into consideration that the law provides for specific punishment for specific crimes. If we don't like the punishments that are handed down, we need to work to effect change in the legal system.
I do not agree with a judge unilaterally handing down draconian punishment that is inconsistent with the written laws just because we all know this crime is awful and we need to "send a message".
The message we need to send is to our law makers. That we will no longer tolerate out dated, lax laws in regard to poaching.
Personally, I will be writing my state and federal representatives expressing my desire to see the laws changed. Rather than simply calling for a "harsh punishment" in this specific case.
