This unit is found in the northeast corner of the state and lies along the South Dakota state line. Healthy deer populations are found here along with some smaller access options for public land hunters. Most of this unit is comprised of develepoed agricultural areas but some great spot and stalk areas are present.
With limited public access options hunters will need to be flexible and have a great e-scouting plan going into the hunt.
Most of this area is comprised of private lands, which does create access issues, but also facilitates excellent herd health and antler growth. This unit does have a fair amount of undeveloped lands, particularly in the west, that can be great for spot and stalk hunting. With minimal elevation fluctuations, apart from occasional creek and river beds, navigating the unit is straightforward and effortless for hunters.
The majority of this region comprises agricultural crop lands, interspersed with scattered stands of mature hardwoods. Ground cover thrives within these wooded areas, creating prime deer habitat. Numerous creeks, rivers, and reservoirs dot the landscape. The western half of the unit is primarily composed of rolling grasslands with prairie grasses and sage brush.
Given the scarcity of public lands, hunters must depend on maps and e-scouting to uncover viable hunting prospects. Some scattered state owned pieces can be found throughout the unit with the largest portions of these being found in the western half. Open Fields and Waters lands are also found throughout the unit with the most notable concentrations being all along the northern border and then also in the southwest corner in the area around the town of Orchard.
Towns and cities are found throughout the zone, particularly along the Highway 20 corridor. Lodging options can be found in the form hotels, motels, and rental properties scattered throughout the unit. Additionally, some public campsites are available. Sporting goods can be found through the area with some of the best selections generally being found in the larger cities.
