Black Bear Permit - Resident Only | $25 |
Missouri’s black bear hunting opportunities are the result of decades of successful conservation and population growth. Once nearly eliminated from the state, black bears have made a strong comeback, particularly in the southern Missouri Ozarks where suitable forest habitat is abundant. The population is estimated at over 900 individuals and continues to grow steadily under careful management.
To maintain healthy bear numbers and ensure sustainable growth, Missouri offers a highly controlled annual black bear hunt through a resident-only random draw. Applicants must choose from one of three designated Bear Management Zones, with permits and harvest quotas tightly limited. In recent years, around 400 permits have been issued statewide, with a small portion of those hunters successfully harvesting a bear. Legal methods include archery and firearms during the designated season, and all harvests must be telechecked and have a premolar tooth submitted for research. While success rates are modest and the draw is competitive, Missouri’s black bear hunt offers a unique and challenging opportunity for resident hunters seeking a rare, high-adventure pursuit.
Black bear permits are drawn randomly with no points
Permits are available only to residents of Missouri
No group applications for black bear permits
All permits are draw only
Hunters must apply for and hunt one of the three available black bear management zones(BMZ).
Each BMZ has a harvest quota which is much lower than the total number of permits issued. Hunters are responsible for ensuring the quota is still open for their area before hunting
