Whitetail Deer | 140"-160" | 160"+ |
Bordering Nebraska and Missouri, this unit consists of hundreds of farms, pastures, woodlots and river and creek bottoms, providing excellent habitat for whitetail deer. It also includes an urban hunting area between Topeka and Kansas City and on Fort Leavenworth.
The public hunting areas in this area are quite crowded. There are lots of dense woods in the eastern half of the unit.
Most of this unit consists of low hills and farmland separated by brushy and timbered drainages. There are large woodlands along creeks and rivers and also in draws and hollows branched from the waterways. Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Doniphan, Atchison, Jefferson and Douglas counties are in this unit, as are most of Johnson and Brown counties and parts of Franklin, Osage, Shawnee and Jackson counties. The Missouri River borders this unit, and the Kansas River runs through it. Other waterways include the Delaware River, which is dammed to form Perry Lake, Hundred and Ten Mile Creek, which is impounded in Pomona Lake, and Marais Des Cygnes River, which runs through Ottawa.
This unit has a lot of timbered areas along with grassy hills and flat to rolling farm fields. There are many different trees, including types of native broadleaves such as elms and oaks, cottonwoods and exotic trees such as pecans. There are cedars and even some introduced Norway pines. Dozens of species of grass, sedges, forbs and brush live in fields, draws and creek and river bottoms.
Lake Shawnee Campground is equipped with showers and has RV and tent campsites. Perry State Park has tent and RV sites and rental cabins. Clinton State Park next to Clinton Lake has 383 campsites and seven rental cabins. Pomona State Park has shady campsites and rental cabins near Pomona Lake. There are many motels and hotels in Topeka and Kansas City and a few motels and private RV parks in several other towns.
Perry State Park, Rock Creek Public Use Area, Slough Creek Public Use Area, Sunset Ridge Public Use Area, and Outlet Public Use Area are all next to Perry Lake. Delaware River Island Wetland, Kyle Marsh, Lower Ferguson Marsh, Upper Ferguson Marsh, Mitigation Marsh and West River Marsh are along the Delaware River just north of Perry Lake --these are part of the Perry Wildlife Area. Part of this unit is on Fort Leavenworth, which is Unit 10A. Through the state’s walk-in hunting program, public hunters may hunt at no fee on several private parcels. These private parcels are listed in the Fall Hunting Atlas, which also includes details on state and federal hunting areas. Controlled shooting areas (private fee hunting areas) in this unit are listed here and here. Some of them might allow deer hunting but are designed primarily for upland bird hunters.
