The Selway zone is located in east-central Idaho along the Montana state line. Most of this zone is an extremely remote and rugged area. Elk herds were once incredible in this area but have dipped in the last decade with wolves being painted as the primary cause. Most of the hunting is this area is done by those with livestock or a strong back and big pack. Some road access can be found in units 19 and 20 for day hunts but the remainder of the zone is remote. Some incredible bulls can still be found in here but it may take a hunter a lifetime to finally locate them.
This zone is very rugged, heavily timbered, and steep. Maintained trails provide the best access options into the remote areas but cross country travel will be necessary for most instances. Ground cover can grow extremely dense in areas and make covering ground difficult. Many small creeks, streams, and rivers criss-cross their way through the zone and can create massive and steep canyons.
Some limited road access can be found in units 19 and 20 but most of the areas within this zone will require the use of livestock or a lot of boot leather. Public land makes up nearly the entire area and really, “if you can see it, you can hunt it”. No motorized or wheeled vehicles are allowed within the Wilderness areas.
