How to navigate Colorado's early backdoor draw results

Each year waiting for the western states draw results is like waiting for Christmas morning over and over again. And if you’re lucky… you get to experience this feeling 3, 5, or even more times depending on how many states you dropped money into.

Some of us can’t wait for the official draw results to be revealed by each state. Which, I might add, is just how kids react when they are waiting for Christmas morning. So… for those of us who are very impatient and must know if we drew, we resort to “backdoor” methods.

I’ve gotten a few messages and emails asking how Colorado’s backdoor draw results system works, so I thought I'd explain the process really quick. I first found out about this method from a good friend back in the day when I started building points for antelope.

What is Colorado’s backdoor draw results method?

Update: As of 5/23/17 - The backdoor method for elk is now available.

Colorado's backdoor method usually gives you a week or two head start on the official results from the state. The backdoor method became available for deer and soon elk will be available. Keep in mind that the following method will allow you to see if you drew a tag. It will not tell you if you drew your first, second, third or fourth choice. You will not know what choice you drew until the actual results come out. This is just a way to show if you have a tag on file and if you'll be hunting the great state of Colorado for the current year.

The backdoor method is only available prior to the actual draw results. When you see that your preference points have been taken down on this page after you login, you will know that the drawing is currently in progress and the Colorado backdoor method should be available soon.

Also, it should be worth noting that things can change and the state could do a re-draw. Historically there were a few different backdoor methods, but recently Colorado cracked down on the source code view on the preference points page and now hides that information.

How to perform the Colorado backdoor method

Step 1

Go to Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) website by clicking on the button below.

Colorado Wildlife Licensing

Step 2

Click the “Start Now” button at the bottom. Continue to fill out the following set of fields.

  • Select your residency
  • Select your U.S. Citizen status.
  • Select your Identification Options
    • Customer ID (CID) Number
    • CC Number
    • Drivers License Number and state
    • Other or none of the above
  • Then click “Continue”

Step 3

You will now arrive at a page that showcases your customer information. Click the button at the botton to confirm the Shipping Address, and then click the button for the Consent To Release Information. After that click on the “Habitat Stamps & All Other Licenses” button in the lower right portion of the page.

Colorado hunting customer information page

Step 4

Now we can finally access the information you have been waiting a long time for. The bottom of this page will show you a list of products you already have on file. A 400 series number means an app is on file and is what you applied for. A 500 series number means that you drew a tag for that license type. For other species you can also tell what you drew if there are two of the same lines of information; one with the word "app" and the other without the word "app."

What it shows when you DO NOT draw

Colorado backdoor draw results not drawn

You will see that the box above only has one line with a deer application and it shows the 491 number. That means you didn't draw.

What it shows when you DO draw

Colorado backdoor method showing that you did draw a hunting tag

You will see that the box above has two lines for deer. The two lines with the same species information is one way to show you have a tag. The other way is to look at the descriptions of each species. In this case one line has "2017 - 491 NON RES DEER APP" and another one has "2017 - 591 NON RES DEER." The 591 number and the missing "app" word on the back means that you drew a deer tag in this case.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that some hunts may not be open at the time you check the backdoor method. Normally elk is posted after deer. Like I stated earlier, things can change and the state could do a re-draw so these results sometimes are not final. The other backdoor method of using the source code on the preference points page has been removed. It seems Colorado is cracking down on the backdoor methods because there could be errors that may upset some people. The backdoor method has been going on for a long time, but I totally see it going away in the coming years if Colorado gets some added development funds to hide this information.

Hopefully this method gave you the early results you were hoping for. Best of luck this year!

Should have the 500 codes up by Wednesday for elk. Following the trend, antelope should be posted as a 500 code by Wednesday the following week. This year, they are not posting what you drew by species as they have in the past.

The 500 code will appear as a license for a species whether you drew your first, second, third, fourth or if you checked the box for a general archery or rifle season tag if you put in that way.

Good Luck!

@Marshall - You will need a 500 series number for it to be drawn. Keep in mind that this method is not final, and your application could still be changing. That is the disclaimer I've gotten from the state. The draw can still change for you.

@Luke - the elk backdoor should be available mid week is what I'm hoping for. When they take away your points, it means they have started the draw process.

@Robert - When your points are gone, that means the application process has started. So hopefully the backdoor results for elk will be up later this week.

Best of luck to you guys!!

Is it only the "491" number for deer to show you were unsuccessful or can it be any 400 number. Mine is showing 490.

@Matthew A. You need to get on the approved Vendor List for the State of Colorado. That or reach out to the procurement office for DNR directly about opportunities... Usually if you do that you can start receiving information about upcoming opportunities. Good Luck

Another blank on deer for me this year in CO. Shouldn't have an issue pulling a decent tag next year though. Guess I'll wait and see if there are any leftovers when it all shakes out. I'll just take solace in my NM Elk tag for now. Need something to do in August/September and November/December though. Might have to plan on going back to Arizona and give Coues another shot.

That's correct. What side of the columns your info is on is determined by how many items you applied for and have on file. So it could be on the right or left. The main thing to look for is the 5** series number which you have.

Nothing for sheep, goat or moose.

Will definitely know what unit I drew when elk pops up...

One thing to consider about the deer draw this year is the seasons were moved back about a week. So last years 3rd season is now what would have been the fourth season time frame last year. It's my opinion that this shook things up a bit and changed peoples season choices. You could see Colorado Mule Deer rut as early as the end of second rifle season this year! Just my thoughts! Good luck everyone!

Thanks Brady, Frankly, I did not expect to draw this year. So, I'm not upset about it. I opted to be put in for the Leftover tags, so that's a possibility. If all fails, it may be OTC only for me this year.

Great info Brady. I appreciate the follow up.

Hi Scott. Hope you had a great weekend. As you have seen, draw odds can never be predictive. They are 100% accurate if everything from last year repeated itself. Point creep can absolutely happen especially when people have been applying in Colorado using the points only method for a long time and then decide to put into the draw or some people might switch units causing the minimum number of points needed to draw that unit increase. So a unit that might have been 3 points in 2015 could now be 4 points or more due to that creep.

It is a little confusing… but this backdoor method is a way people are checking their results after the draw has been conducted. Meaning the state has already performed the deer draw on their back end system, but they just haven’t officially released the draw results.

The one thing to keep in mind, is that Colorado can do a re-draw. They did on last year and some people who “drew” using the backdoor method, ended up not drawing when the official results are out vice versa. It is almost safe to assume that you did not draw your deer tag if it only shows “2016 - 491 NON RES DEER APP.” I personally wouldn’t make any plans yet until the official results are out. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you ever have any questions.

OK Guys, as I posted earlier, I'm fairly new to the drawing system. But, I'm confused a bit. The app deadline was April 5. Colorado's 2016 Big Game Guide says the draw results aren't posted until June 1 and mailed June 17.

How is it that some here are indicating they've drawn already. All I can guess is that the draw has already occurred and people here are indicating they've drawn by using what's posted in this article.

If that's the case, if I don't see, based on what this article says, '2016 - 591 NON RES DEER'. Is it safe to say I didn't draw and now it's OTC time for me?

@Kane, sorry to hear about that. I am suspecting a giant point creep this year. From what I have heard from a few people who didn't draw... it is totally looking like point creep is the culprit.

@Scott, glad you enjoyed the article. Unfortunately the backdoor method will only let you know if you drew or did not drew. Since you put in for four choices, you at least know you drew one of your four choices. You will not know which choice you drew until the official results come out. I'll make a post right away announcing when the official state results are out. Like you... I can't wait to see the official results.

@Matthew, I am totally surprised this isn't fixed. Especially when people had things happen to them like you did last year... could cause a huge problem. I imagine it is a funding deal and probably isn't on their top priority. I do see it going away in the years to come.

Here's a question. I put in for the following:
* DM070O4R
* DM064O1A
* DM072O4R
* DE077O1A

Since I put in for four spots, does the above site only show one line for all four units? And, if you're drawn, and you see '2016 - 591 NON RES DEER' how can you tell which unit you were drawn for?
