Edit: There has been an update to the story and the two hunters have been indicted in a shooting they falsely claimed was started by unauthorized immigrants. Stay tuned for a full update on this case.

New Mexico hunting guide Walker Daugherty is in critical condition after retaliating against a band of Mexican kidnappers after his clients. Daugherty suffered a shot to his abdomen following gunfire between him and the assailants, who had already opened fire on the RV where Daugherty’s clients were staying.

The clients were still inside.

The incident occurred on the remote Circle Doug Ranch, west of Candelaria, TX, which is close to the Mexico border. According to The Westerner, Daugherty stumbled upon the attackers when he stepped outside of his nearby hunting lodge to investigate suspicious noise, which turned out to be several shooters targeting his clients’ RV. Shots soon echoed throughout the night as Daugherty and another guide, Michael Bryant, rushed to the clients’ defense. The RV was “riddled with bullet holes from the attack and suffered other structural damage” and Daugherty had to be pulled to safety, according to The Westerner.

The family, which runs Redwing Outfitters (a goHUNT Business Member), had been working with US Border Patrol recently after a series of thefts occurred on the ranch. Because of the number of attackers and direction of gunfire, the family suspects that the attackers intended to kill everyone there, according to The Westerner.

Fortunately, Daugherty’s and Bryant’s wives were able to call 911 from inside the lodge, despite bad cell phone reception. The client’s wife, who is a nurse, was able to keep Daugherty’s bleeding under control while they waited for an hour for a medivac helicopter to arrive. He was taken to El Paso, TX and is in critical condition.

The client, Edwin Roberts, was shot in the arm and is expected to fully recover.

The attackers have not been found. There is a gofundme account that was setup by friends to help with medical expenses. You can donate to the gofundme account here

Do you think this was a botched kidnapping or something worse?

I think it is just another example of the problem we have here in the country. So sad, that it is has to come to this. I'm praying for his family. The sad part is if they are captured, nothing will be done.

Prayers up for him and thank goodness that he was able to scare away the attackers. Perhaps they'll think twice next time. I am confused regarding the Facebook post. The details in the Facebook post (shot in the chest vs stomach) and that one of the wives was in the RV (the newspapers says both wives were in the lodge) versus the newspaper article have some very important facts conflicting.
I SO wish they would build a wall instead of just talking about it.

It was all friendly fire. Edwin shot Walker through the RV door because him and his wife were spooked. It escalated from there...http://www.therepublic.com/2017/01/12/tx-west-texas-ranch-shooting/

There is a lot of info going back and forth. We have been waiting for some concrete answers before we ran the follow-up. But like Wesley said... this is looking more and more like friendly fire.

It has been confirmed. No ambush. Friendly fire.

And it turns out the hunters are LYING RACISTS. The idiots screwed up and shot each other by mistake, then blamed it on imaginary Mexicans.

Perhaps you should post a retraction on this page, as the evidence has shown none of this is true except that they got shot and were in serious condition. They bilked thousands of people out of money to pay for this surgery based on allegations that it was illegals who did this, but evidence has shown thy did it to each other. If you are going to report any kind of news, be responsible about it and make sure the original story gets updated with correct information, like real news organizations do, if you want to be taken seriously. https://apnews.com/6cb4c81139024035af7bc406447e716f

Hi Linda Z. - I strive to get the full details of a story before creating any new articles. So that is why we haven't covered this yet. We are going to have another article on this subject and I will go into this article (and the other one) and add a link to the new article just like I do on all other articles that need an addition (just waiting on some info).

A few days ago I reached out to the Daugherty family to ask for a statement from them. So I am going to wait until we have a statement before we publish another article after the recent findings. Hope you have a great day!

PLEASE UPDATE THIS ARTICLE AND MAKE SURE IT SAYS IT IS FALSE IN THE TITLE.

THIS MAKES OTHER PAGES LINKS UPDATE SO FALSEHOODS ARE NOT CASCADING ACROSS THE INTERNET.

Everyone: please make comments like this on every news article you find that is later found provably false. It is up to us to control the media from leaving fake news lying about. Paper newspapers used to print retractions, but nobody really searched out old papers. Now, false articles like this float around the internet like polution. It is up to force the media to clean them up.

Left, right, whatever..... make noise and force web news sites to clean up their mess

Hi Dan.

If you would have read my comment above yours, you would see that I am making changes to all of these articles. Just like I do every time something like this happens. People are innocent until proven guilty. So you will have news articles like this, and then when the final ruling comes out, you will have to change the information on the old article.

Also, out of respect for the family, I have reached out to them for a statement and am waiting on that before we write another article.

I did read it and I don't consider it satisfactory to have a little comment all the way at the bottom of the page. How long did you vet the original article? At the very least, you should put a notice near the head that says the facts are in dispute.

I simply want people to actively work to clean up the internet news, especially small blogs that print articles that serve to engender high levels of anger.

Here is a 15 second google search if you want to get a start on your research:
