Draw Odds Now Updated For 2018

goHUNT INSIDER Draw Odds Updated For 2018

Each year we release a bunch of enhancements to our Draw Odds platform, and this year is no different. The result of these updates further showcases us as having the most accurate draw odds in the industry.

Instead of just updating all the data for 2018, we wanted to bring you more information than ever before. This year we included several major enhancements:

1. Faster Load Times

The more data points you add to a system, typically the slower the system performs. Not anymore! We made it a goal to squash slow load times, and we are happy to say that for 2018, Draw Odds load times are much quicker.

2. More Data - Updated Draw Odds Across Every State

Draw Odds landing page updated for 2018
We have draw odds for nine western states.

Every state and unit has been updated to show the latest draw odds. You'll now be able to see exactly how the 2017 draw played out to help you decide how to apply in 2018.

goHUNT year over year draw odds data
Year-over-year draw odds view showing an applicant who is at the 7 point level. See trends in draw odds, point creep, applications and tags drawn.

Along with the updated odds, you’ll now be able to track trends even further with another level of our year-over-year data on our draw odds detail page. You’ll now see exactly how the draws have played out for each state through the years (tracking point creep) and you’ll be able to track the trends at your point level.

Small features added

Montana adjustment

Montana draw odds options

We have now broken apart Draw Odds in Montana and provide the odds for the Deer Combo, Elk Combo, and Big Game Combo. If you want to see the draw odds for Montana's Nonresident Big Game Combo license (deer and elk tag option), simply select Nonresident Big Game Combo when you're on the standalone Draw Odds page or on Filtering 2.0.

Black bear draw odds

goHUNT black bear draw odds

We also have added black bear draw odds for Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. You’ll be able to see draw odds for black bear under Filtering 2.0 and the standalone Draw Odds page for each state.

Additional questions related to Draw Odds

We’ve also added sections for a Draw Odds FAQ page in several different locations. This is a great place for finding answers to common questions you may have about Draw Odds. You’ll find this on the Draw Odds homepage and also, the Draw Odds FAQs can be found on each Draw Odds detail pages.

@Dillon - Thank you for the support! Our goal is to continue to provide more and more data for our INSIDERs to make the best application decisions they can, and ultimately, hunt more too. We are excited to mention that we will have Utah bear draw odds for 2019! All of the new enhancements will be going live this next week.

Hey Paul, we don't cover youth hunts yet but it is on our enhancement list. Thanks

I haven't seen an option to pull the draw odd for youth tags. Is this something planned for the future? Thanks!

Hey David, thank you for the comment. We don't have that feature yet but its a good idea. We have plans to add a Hunter Dashboard which would allow you to save hunts, store your points, etc but we will add this idea to the list as well. Thanks again.

is there a way to exclude units to narrow the search area after you have looked at it and decide not interested. Or just show tags that are between two %

@ Joshua P

Montana has not been the most consistent in collected harvest data, especially for general season hunts. They often provide the number of bucks or bulls harvested but not the number of hunters. In saying that, recently they have provided some more data and we are currently working through it. It seems to be getting better for elk, but the deer data is still less than ideal. We will continue to try to obtain better data and as we receive it we will process and get it live on the site.

Im looking through the Montana deer info and cannot seem to find harvest success for the general units any info greatly appreciated.

@ Brian D,

Sorry you were unsuccessful in the draw and I understand your frustration. When you are counting on a permit and it doesn't work out it's definitely discouraging. I know you didn't directly ask a question, but let me add to Jeremy's response with an explanation.

Most states that have a point system experience what we call point creep. We touch on it in almost all of the application strategy articles and in the draw odds Q&A section, but essentially there are more people applying every year than there are permits so it requires an additional point every year to draw. This is not always the case but in alot of instances it is. In addition to reviewing the main draw odds page, it's important to click on the detailed draw odds links for each hunt you are considering to gauge the demand from year to year at each point level.

We often get asked if we predict odds and as Jeremy stated we do not. We cannot predict odds based on the fact that there are two many variables that could change from year to year (i.e. numbers of permits and where applicants apply) The best that can be done is to evaluate the last known dataset, which is from the 2017 draw, and display the most accurate odds of what happened in the draw. From that, you can use the information to evaluate your chances of drawing any given permit the following year. In the long run odds are still odds, which is the likelihood that something will happen based on the known data.

Once again, sorry that you didn't draw and if you have any further question about the site or how to use it or even strategy questions, feel free to contact me any time. All the best with the rest of your applications.

@Brian D. - Are you a res or non-res (assume non-res as your Kalamazoo tag)? Did you do special or regular? I am guessing that if you did regular that there were a lot of folks that might have thought about special but instead applied for regular given the steep increase in tag fees this year. If that occurred, there goes your anticipated 100% draw odds. Also, 2017 draw odds do not necessarily tell you what your odds will be for 2018- that all depends on tags and applications- simple numerators and denominators that change every year.

I guess the 100% draw odds gohunt had for me going into the 2018 WY general elk tag draw aren't part of the enhanced accuracy, as I somehow didn't draw. This membership sure is paying off so far.....

@ T.J. H

Correct, 11 points was the max going into last years draw which is what the odds are calculated from. You can enter 11 points to review your odds.

We often get asked why our odds are generated from last years data and the short answer is that is the last complete data set that we or anyone has because the 2018 draw has not yet happened. We cannot predict odds, given the fact that there are several variables that can change. In the end, odds just that, the likelihood that something will happen based on the known data, which was last years full draw.

T.J. H. - posted 2 years ago on 01-18-2018 03:44:21 pm

The WY elk doesn't seem to be updated. When I put my 12 points in it says that exceeds the point limit. Am I supposed to be using last years point totals?

@ Bruce L.

Thanks for the comment! For the 2 elk seasons in 28, 31 and 32. If you are a resident with 1 point you'd have a 100% chance at the archery season and it only has 5 permits. There were only 9 people total that applied for that hunt. When you take into account that some of those are nonresidents, as a resident you're not competing against that many people. For the rifle season, with 10 permits, as a resident with 1 point, it's showing that you have a 17% chance. As you would suspect with a rifle season there are more applicants and a lower odds of drawing. Just because there are a small number of permits it doesn't mean that you'll have low odds of drawing, it all depends on how many people are competing for those tags. I hope that this helps, let us know if we can help in any way.

I'm planning for elk in AZ. I've got 1 pt. Draw odds for units 28, 31, and 32 are 100%. But in the AZ regs there are only 10 permits. How is it that I'm guaranteed to get drawn when there are only 10 permits? Maybe I don't understand what "draw odds" means.

@ Kenny J.

Thanks for the comment and you are correct, you can apply for either the Type 1 (Any Bison) or the Type 4 (Any Cow/Calf Bison). We have typically only covered the male or either sex hunts, but this year we are adding female hunts to Draw Odds for all species. We are still working through these and they 'll be up a little later this month. Thanks again!

Glad to see you're adding female species, it'll be a great tool. I spoke with one of your folks about it last spring and he said you were considering adding it. My wife and I were able to draw several doe/cow tags second choice with his help. Keep up the great work!

@ James B.

Thanks for the comment. As you're probably aware Unit 1, 2B and 2C Early Rifle and Early Muzzleloader flip-flop every other year. The odds for the Early Rifle won't show because that season isn't offered in 2018 and we've updated to the 2018 dates for elk and antelope. The odds for the Early Muzzleloader are showing on the unit profiles (i'll attach a link) but we hit a small hiccup and they are not displaying on the Draw Odds stand alone. That will be fixed tomorrow, I apologize for that. Thanks again!

Here's the link to Unit 1:

@ Jeff A.

Great question! We are in the middle up updating the season dates as they get released by the various states. In AZ we have the 2018 Elk and Antelope dates, those are approved in early December. New Mexico just released their 2018 dates this week so we'll be getting those updated as quickly as we can. The other states will follow as the regulations are released. Thanks
