The 2020 Montana Alternate List sign up is now available online!

So, what is the Montana Alternate's List?

Each year, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks receives a number of unused nonresident combination licenses (big game combination, general elk and general deer) returned. FWP then resells these returned licenses through their Alternate’s List.

You can select your choice of several different nonresident combination licenses (big game combination, general elk or general deer). Then, once the list is randomized and a license becomes available, the hunter at the top of the list will be contacted to finalize the purchase of the license.

When filling out your alternate list application, the day you register does not matter.

How to sign up

You can sign up for the Alternate’s List from May 21 until July 7 through MyFWP by clicking the link below and then logging in.

Register for Montana's Alternate List Sign Up

Each hunter may only register on one combination license list (big game combination, general elk or general deer), and is not eligible to purchase more than one nonresident combination license a year.

Once you are logged in, click on MyFWP Information. And then click on the Combination License Alternate List tab.

Selecting combo license for alternate list

After the signup period closes, the list will be randomized to determine each hunter’s prioritization on these lists.

Payment for the license fee is not required at the time you sign up for the Alternate’s List. If your name is selected, you will be contacted with instructions on how to complete the purchase of the license.

Note: Drawing a tag or being on the list has no effect on your existing preference points.

Once the alternate list application deadline has closed, you'll be assigned a number and a random drawing of all the names will be conducted. Starting in mid-July, you can check your position on the alternate list after the drawing takes place.

The odds of getting a license can change throughout the season. Hunters turning back in their tags for a refund and the state reissuing these deer combo licenses may occur at any time, but the volume of returned licenses normally increases before the general rifle hunting season kicks off in late October.

Nice! I didn't know you could get a B cow tag with just a deer license but this is also the first time I have not had an elk tag, I say that with rivers of tears flowing down my grown man face. But thanks I will remember that for the future.

Gary,

I don't know if this list applies to the left over and returned limited entry tags you might find out from FWP.

Just curious, how did you apply for a B cow tag without a general elk or combination tag?

Not really what I am asking. I didn't apply for an elk general tag combination license. I would like to apply for a leftover or returned license for a limited entry tag. Is this the way to get onto that list yes or no?

Having said that I did get a general deer tag this season for Montana and I am in for a type-B cow tag as well but have not heard back about that yet.

The alternates list is for deer and elk.

Each hunter may only register on one combination license list (big game combination, general elk or general deer), and is not eligible to purchase more than one nonresident combination license a year.

So the permit drawings are not on this list and this list only pertains to the general elk licenses correct?

No you do not have to apply for the general drawing to be on this list, simply click on the blue link that GOHUNT has above. Sign in to your account and add your name to the alternates list, you will not have to put down any money up front. If you have any more questions I will try my best to help. Good luck and happy hunting!

To get on the list did you need to apply in the drawing, or is it open to everybody? I decided to forgo MT this year, but am reconsidering getting on this list if possible.

Thanks again GOHUNT for explaining this process, this is my first time having to use the alternates list for Montana and I've hunted there for ten years. Montana's FWP website has always been very difficult to find solid information or to navigate but you guys always do a great job explaining it in plain English! Thanks

Is there any insight on how many of each category have been returned in previous years? My main goal is elk, so if There are typically fewer big games combos returned it would be nice to know that it’s better to just go for elk only.

Thanks!

Thanks for the insight about what happens when general tags are returned. What about returned limited entry tags?

Hey Clint. That is a great question. Unfortunately you cannot do that under this system. You would each have to do it individually and hope your number is close to each other and that both of you get offered a tag if they become available.

Can you sign up for the alternate list as a party with two guys or not? Guessing no but just checking. Thanks
