2018 Leftover Tags/Draws: Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah
Jump to: Colorado nevada New Mexico Utah
The 2018 draws across the West are pretty much over. Several states still need to release their results, so hunters are either planning for their upcoming hunts, and others are trying to pick up last minute leftover tags or OTC tags. If you still don't have your season ironed out, you're in luck. Several states have leftover tags for 2018.
Colorado
If you were unsuccessful in the first limited deer or elk draw and selected the option to receive the leftover list, then you are eligible to participate in the July leftover draw. Note: According to CPW, you are only eligible to participate in the species which you were unsuccessful and for which you selected the Leftover Draw. You must submit a leftover application by the July 3, 2018 deadline. You can apply online through your CPW account or by phone at 800-244-5613.
2018 leftover draw for deer and elk tags
Main Colorado leftover sales
Leftover big game limited licenses in Colorado for antelope, bear, deer, elk go on sale at 9 a.m. on August 7, 2018 in person, online, and by phone. These licenses have gone through the draw process and still have quota remaining. Update: the 2018 leftover list is now available as of July 25 and can be found here.
The Reissue Process
The reissue of big game limited licenses begins on August 14, 2018.
All of the returned licenses that take four or fewer preference points in the current years draw will be available for purchase the week after processing is complete. After the initial run, hunt codes will randomly be placed on the current leftover and leftover OTC with cap lists on business days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
5 or more preference points
Returned deer, elk, pronghorn and bear hunt codes that took 5 or more resident preference points to draw, in the current years draw, will be reissued to the next person in the draw order.
- These reissued licenses will require the use of preference points as per regulation if accepted.
- If one of the first 5 customers contacted, per returned license, do not accept it, the license will then be reissued utilizing the current leftover and leftover OTC with cap lists.
4 or fewer preference points
All other returned limited and over-the-counter (OTC) with caps licenses, excluding public Ranching for Wildlife, will be available to any of the public, who meet licensing and education requirements.
- These returned limited and OTC with caps licenses reissued utilizing the current leftover and leftover OTC with cap lists will NOT require the use of preference points.
- Limited and OTC with caps licenses will continue to be reissued as long as a sufficient number of licenses are returned or unsold.
Nevada
The second draw application period for Nevada is from June 8 through June 25. Both residents and nonresidents are available to apply for the second draw. The deadline to submit your application online is 11 p.m. PST. You can apply online here. Results will be made available on July 20, 2018. Note: If you apply for a tag in the second draw and are successful you will lose your bonus points. If you are building points, I highly suggest you avoid picking up a leftover tag during the second draw. The remaining tags are not worth burning 3, 5, or even 10 bonus points for. But, if you're just starting to apply in Nevada or you're looking for a hunt to fill a void in your hunt schedule, then applying for a leftover tag is a smart move. The list of available tags and their trophy potential can be found in the tables below.
Note: You will not lose your bonus points if you pick up a tag that is leftover after the second draw (first-come, first serve). Any mule deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, mountain goat or bighorn sheep tags remaining after the completion of the big game second draw process will be available to eligible resident and nonresident applicants through a first-come, first-served process, with the exception of the junior mule deer and antlerless mule deer hunt tags, which will only be available to eligible resident applicants. Applicants must be at least 12 years old at the time the application for a first-come, first-served tag is submitted for a hunt season that is already in progress.
Each year we are seeing less and less leftover tags in Nevada.
To put this in perspective... in 2014 there were 2,812 mule deer tags available in the second draw. The majority of those were antlerless with 1,640 tags, but there also was 654 archery buck tags, 52 muzzleloader buck tags, plus 455 junior either sex deer tags. In 2015 there were 1,747 leftover antlerless deer tags, 465 leftover archery buck tags, plus 345 junior either sex deer tags. In 2016 the following leftover tags were available: 157 antlerless deer tags, 110 archery buck tags, plus 84 junior either sex deer tags. In 2017 there were only 10 antlerless, 106 archery buck tags, plus 62 junior either sex tags. 2017 was the first time in a very long time that Unit Group 101-109 archery didn't have leftover tags, but with the tag increase in 2018, there are once again leftover tags available.
For 2018, there are only 277 archery mule deer tags available in the second draw. Units available are Unit 032, 101-109, 141-145 and 171-173. There are also 247 resident only antlerless mule deer and five resident only antlerless elk tags available.
Note: All remaining tags (except antlerless and youth) are available to both resident and nonresident eligible applicants, regardless if they were resident or nonresident leftover.

New Mexico
For 2018 there are 203 deer hunting licenses and 10 javelina licenses available as leftovers. These licenses go on sale at 10 a.m. MDT June 27 and are first-come, first served. Note: Leftover licenses will be sold online only. Licenses and stamps can be printed from any computer by signing on to an account and selecting “My purchases.” You'll be able to apply online here.
For the first 24 hours, the sale will be open only to New Mexico residents, but at 10 a.m. on June 28, the sale is open to anyone – regardless of residency. This is a great chance to snap up a leftover license.
To be eligible to buy a leftover license, hunters are reminded that they previously must have purchased either a Game Hunting or Game Hunting and Fishing license. Those licenses, along with Habitat Improvement Stamps and Habitat Management Access Validations, also can be obtained through online accounts. Hunters are strongly encouraged to obtain or review online customer accounts, including their Customer Identification Number, username, and password, and to be signed on to their account before the sale begins. Popular licenses often sell out very fast and the majority of tags are picked up by residents before nonresidents can pick them up.
