Little Wood River Outfitters has been operating in the Pioneer Mountains for the past 42 years.  With the previous owners’ decision to retire, I fulfilled a lifelong dream to purchase an outfitting business.  As a lifelong resident of Idaho, I grew up hunting, fishing, and packing in the backcountry of Idaho with my family.  Today, my family and I sincerely hope to share these same experiences we’ve had in this beautiful backcountry of Idaho with you and yours to help keep these wilderness experiences alive and well for generations to come.

Available Hunts

Hunt Drop Camps:
What is a drop camp?
This is where we pack you and/or your gear on horseback to a designated camp spot. We then leave you for a specific amount of time and then come back for you. You may either ride or you may hike into your campsite.

Why would I want a drop camp?
Drop camps are an alternative for the in-shape experienced hunter who may be on a budget or who may just not want to feed livestock all year to use for 1 week a year but wants to get away from the crowds and access the remote parts of elk country and have energy enough when he gets there to actually hunt. They are less than half the price of a fully guided hunt and they allow you to run the camp the way you already know how without someone telling you when and how to hunt.

General Drop Camp Information:
We offer Outfitted and Non-Outfitted for hunters who prefer a more do-it-yourself type of hunt. All of the Drop Camps are located in the backcountry best accessed by horseback and pack string. These are camps located in excellent country.

Elk Hunting:
With the coming of fall, one can hear the distant bugle and crashing of racks as the big bulls fight for dominance. Come with us this fall and chase the Elk of your dreams or bring your son or daughter on their first hunt. It is an adventure that they will not soon forget. All of our hunts are conducted out of a comfortable base camp high in the mountains. Little Wood River is allocated 9 Rifle Permits for Bull Elk for the October Season.

Mule Deer:
Our wilderness mule deer hunts offer an excellent chance at a trophy buck! We scout the high-country bucks and know where to find the big boys. Our wilderness hunts are challenging, physical hunts in a gorgeous setting.  Mule Deer hunting in this rugged country can be very demanding. For the best rate of success, we urge all of our hunters to be in top physical shape.

Bear Hunts:
Spring Bear hunting takes place between April 15th and June 15th. All Bear hunting is done over bait hounds with bait on spot and stalk. Baiting is over established bait sites. The Bears that will be pursued are 85% color phase. You may choose between Rifle or Bow. Come enjoy the beauty of Spring in the mountains. Fall Bear hunts are only linked with Elk or Deer hunts.
We suggest booking early!

Pack Trips:
For folks with a hearty sense of adventure, there is no finer vacation than a classic Wilderness Horse Pack Trip in the Pioneer Mountains. Our Guided Pack Trip allows you to enjoy riding, hiking, fly fishing or just relaxing while camping in the heart of the mountains. Our guides prepare wonderful meals, tend camp, wrangle horses and guide you on rides/hikes from basecamp.
