Didn’t draw a tag in Nevada? Well… you’re not alone. Applicants who didn’t draw a tag this year in Nevada have a second chance to hunt the Silver State.

The second draw application period is from June 10 through June 27. Both residents and nonresidents are available to apply for the second draw. The deadline to submit your application through the mail is 5 p.m. on June 27 and online applications have until 11 p.m. PST. You can apply online here. Note: If you apply for a tag in the second draw and are successful you will lose your bonus points. If you are building points, I highly suggest you avoid picking up a leftover tag. The remaining tags are not worth burning 3, 5, or even 10 bonus points for. But, if you're just starting to apply in Nevada or you are looking for a hunt to fill a void in your hunt schedule, then applying for a leftover tag is a smart move. The list of available tags and their trophy potential can be found in the tables below.

Tag cuts happened all across Nevada in 2016. To put the tag cuts in perspective... in 2014 there were 2,812 mule deer tags available in the second draw. The majority of those were antlerless with 1,640 tags, but there also was 654 archery buck tags, 52 muzzleloader buck tags, plus 455 junior either sex deer tags. In 2015 there were 1,747 leftover antlerless deer tags, 465 leftover archery buck tags, plus 345 junior either sex deer tags. Compare that to 2016 leftover tags of 157 antlerless deer tags, 110 archery buck tags, plus 84 junior either sex deer tags.

Apply for Bonus Points in the Second Draw

If you forgot to get apply for mule deer bonus points in the 2016 main draw, you can buy a hunting license then select the Bonus Point Only option during the second draw application period. The deadline for Nevada's bonus point application period is July 5, 2016 at 11:00 p.m. PST.

Leftover Hunt Options for 2016

A Few Notable Units to Check Out

Units 101 - 109

In the past, unit group 101 - 109 always had leftover tags and this year is the same. The information I got from the biologist's was this unit group was going to see a large tag cut for 2016. And it seems that was the case. A large number of nonresidents might have been surprised by the draw results that were posted in late May because normally a nonresident can pull this tag very easily. This year there are only 59 leftover tags compared to 620 in 2014 and 359 in 2015. All of these tags were leftover resident tags that a nonresident can now apply for. In this unit group, expect to find bucks to top out at 150" to 170" with a buck:doe ratio of 29:100. This is not a trophy unit. Archery harvest was 18% in 2015. Even with the reduction in tags, expect to see crowds of hunters and other people putting stalks on the bucks you might be glassing.

Units 171 - 173

Unit group 171 - 173 boasts an impressive 150" to 170"+ trophy potential with a buck:doe ratio of 36:100 and 35% of the bucks harvested are four point or better. The archery season in 2015 had a harvest success rate of 11%, which is an average success rate. Plus, during the archery season in 2015 there were only 200 bowhunters in the field. We can expect to see similar tag quotas for 2016.

Units 271, 272

Unit group 271, 272 is an area that can produce a 170"+ trophy potential with 58% of the bucks taken are 4 point or better. The problem? There is only one leftover tag available, so your odds of pulling this tag in the leftover draw are going to be very slim. This area also holds low mule deer numbers due to the arid landscape, but if you're up to the challenge and scout hard to find a water source to hunt near, this could be a good option to bowhunt Nevada mule deer if you don't have any bonus points built up.

When Will Second Draw Results Be Posted?

Nevada's second draw results don't give you a lot of time to plan for vacation time for the early archery hunts. Second draw results will be available online on July 22. Once available, draw results can be found here. Any remaining tags after the second draw will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
