The Denver Fur Ban ballot is back on-deck, with supporters pressing for new restrictions – this time through a petition to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission seeking to ban the sale of furbearer fur and products. CPW defines “furbearers” as species traditionally hunted or trapped for commercial fur, including mink, badger, beaver, coyote and fox.
Although the petition exempts finished, hand-tied fishing flies, it doesn’t exempt the fur used to make them. The proposal could effectively bar common practices, such as hunters trading legally harvested pelts with fly-tyers or anglers buying small amounts of fur sourced from out of state for tying flies.
Current furbearer population estimates are “difficult to obtain,” but “available information suggests that populations are healthy,” according to the Colorado Chapter of Trout Unlimited. The petition doesn’t propose the restrictions due to a drop in furbearer numbers – just that “CPW’s data is not comprehensive.” Further, the petitioners aren’t requesting a way to obtain current furbearer population data to make an informed science-based wildlife management decision. Instead, this appears to be politically motivated.
The commission will consider the petition during the March 4–5 meeting at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Westminster. Public comments can be submitted online and must be received by noon on Feb. 27 to be included in briefing materials.
